The holiday season often leaves us craving a quiet escape once the wrapping paper is cleared away. There is something magical about the days immediately following Christmas…the lights are still twinkling, the festive spirit lingers, but the frenetic pace has slowed to a comfortable stroll.
If you are looking for the perfect post-holiday getaway that includes your four-legged best friend, look no further than Newport, Rhode Island. While famous for its Gilded Age summer vibes, this historic coastal town transforms into a cozy, glittering wonderland in the winter.
Here is how to spend a perfect dog-friendly weekend exploring the “City by the Sea” when the temperature drops.
Where to Stay: Waking Up on the Water at Bannister’s Wharf
Finding truly unique accommodations that welcome dogs can be a challenge, but Newport delivers. For this trip, the location of choice is Bannister’s Wharf. This isn’t just “waterfront”, it is practically on the water.
Bannister’s Wharf is the heart of Newport’s harbor action. The guest rooms here offer an experience you won’t find at a standard hotel. To reach the waterfront rooms, with full deck balconies, you climb an exterior staircase that is actually built directly over the harbor water. It is a thrilling little start to your stay, listening to the water lap beneath the steps as you head up to your room.

The rooms are cozy, charming, and most importantly, dog-friendly. Waking up to the sound of seagulls and the crisp winter air off the harbor is the perfect reset button. Being right in the center of town means you can easily pop back to the room to warm up or drop off your pup if you decide to visit a non-dog-friendly indoor spot.

The best part, aside from the waterfront rooms with large bay windows overlooking the marina, water, and bridge, is the Coffee Grinder shop located just below. It’s a cozy café that serves freshly brewed, made-to-order lattes, and the aroma as you wake up is incredible. Having a coffee shop just steps from your door was truly a highlight.

Winter Charm Meets Modern Comfort
Newport in late December is a masterclass in atmosphere. The city balances its deep colonial roots with the comforts you need on a chilly day.
Old World Vibes
Walking the cobblestone streets feels like stepping back in time. The historic homes are adorned with tasteful wreaths, white lights, and candles in the windows. It’s “old world charm” at its finest.
Modern Essentials
Despite the history, you aren’t sacrificing modern necessities. Even the Starbucks on Thames Street feels special, housed in a beautiful brick building that fits right into the historic aesthetic. It’s the perfect pit stop to grab a puppuccino for your dog and a hot latte for yourself before continuing your walk.
Dog-Friendly Activities and Sightseeing
Winter in Newport isn’t about sitting inside. It’s about bundling up and exploring the dramatic coastline.

The Cliff Walk and Water Trails
No trip to Newport is complete without walking along the water. While the famous Cliff Walk has sections that can be tricky for dogs (and slippery in winter), there are plenty of paved walking trails and harbor walks that are safer and just as scenic. The crisp ocean breeze is invigorating, and the views of the Atlantic crashing against the rocks are even more dramatic in winter.
Ocean Drive and Brenton Point State Park
Hop in the car for a scenic drive along Ocean Drive. This ten-mile route offers stunning views of the coastline and the massive “summer cottages” (mansions) of the wealthy elite. Make a stop at Brenton Point State Park, located at the southwestern tip of the island. It’s a fantastic open space for your dog to stretch their legs on a long leash while you watch the kites flying and the waves rolling in.

Bailey’s Beach
Tucked away among the imposing waterfront historic mansions is a hidden gem we discovered: Bailey’s Beach. While often known as an exclusive private club, there is a small public beach area where locals bring their dogs in the off-season.
It was a highlight of the trip to let our dog, Bailey, explore “her” beach. Watching a dog frolic in the sand in the middle of winter is pure joy. The beach is secluded enough to feel private but offers grand views of the surrounding estates.

The Skating Center
Right in the center of town at the Newport Yachting Center, you will find a spectacular outdoor ice skating rink. Even if you don’t skate, it is a beautiful sight to see. With the harbor in the background and holiday lights strung overhead, it creates a quintessential winter scene. It’s a great spot for photo ops with your pup as the rink is surrounded by plenty of open space and benches.

Dining and Drinks
Newport’s food scene remains vibrant throughout the winter.
Cozy Pubs
For a meal, look for the multi-story pubs along Thames Street and the wharf. Many of these establishments have heated outdoor decks or semi-enclosed areas where dogs are often welcome, even in winter. O’Brien’s Pub, however, goes a step further by welcoming dogs inside during the colder months. They even have a dog menu featuring burgers and bring out water in a bowl for your pup. Bailey loved her meals there and all the attention she got!
Inside (for humans only), the two-story pubs offer roaring fireplaces and hearty New England chowder that warms you from the inside out. The infamous Brick Alley Pub is still one of my favorite spots in Newport to eat, socialize, and even play a few rounds of Pac-Man on their vintage arcade machine upstairs in the “top o’ the brick’ room.

The Black Pearl
Located right on Bannister’s Wharf, The Black Pearl is an institution. While dogs aren’t allowed inside the dining room, their patio area is a legendary spot to grab a bowl of their world-famous clam chowder. In the winter, the wharf is quieter, and you can enjoy the ambiance of the harbor lights reflecting off the water.

Why Visit in Winter?

The true beauty of Newport at this time of year is the lighting. The entire city seems to glow. The wharves are lined with illuminated Christmas trees, the riggings of the boats in the harbor are strung with lights, and the historic homes are tastefully decorated.
Unlike the crowded summer months where you are fighting for sidewalk space, the winter offers a peaceful serenity. You can actually see the architecture, enjoy the silence of the ocean, and let your dog sniff every cobblestone without being rushed.
A winter weekend in Newport proves that you don’t need tropical weather to have a relaxing vacation. All you need is a warm coat, a good pair of boots, and a happy dog by your side.
