First, make your natural red food coloring. I used frozen cranberries, a few frozen strawberries, and a splash of water. Boiled, drained of any excess liquid, blended up, and set aside to cool before introducing to the dough mixture. You can also use beets, beet powder (in moderation), or raspberries.

The Steps:

  • Combine oat flour*, egg, and applesauce
  • Divide dough in half
  • Add natural coloring to one
  • Roll out dough and make strips with knife or pizza cutter
  • Swap every other strip to create red/white stripe design
  • Make shapes using cookie cutters
  • Bake

*Make your own oat flour by simply blending rolled oats in a blender, food processor, or spice grinder until it is a flour consistency! Yes, it’s that easy!

Description

Striped red Christmas cookies specially made for dogs!  No artificial dyes or ingredients.  Makes about 18 cookies

Ingredients

Scale

3 cups oat flour or rolled oats finely blended into a flour consistency

1 large egg

1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce (plain. just apples. no sugar or sugar additives).

Natural red coloring:

Beets, beet powder, cranberries, strawberries, or raspberries.

I use about 1/4 cup frozen cranberries + 3 frozen strawberries with a splash of water.  Cook over med/high heat for about 5-10 minutes. Drain any excess liquid out and then blend it with an immersion blender (or similar). set aside to cool before adding to the dough.

Instructions

  1. Mix together oat flour, egg, and applesauce.
  2. Separate half of the dough into another small bowl
  3. Incorporate the natural coloring into one half of the dough, until the desired color is reached. *add extra oat flour to the dough if the coloring has too much liquid in it.
  4. Gently knead and roll out the dough separately
  5. Using a knife, cut lines lengthwise like the picture:
  6. Switch out every other strip so that the dough is striped red/white. Use a rolling pin to meld all the pieces together.
  7. Using cookie cutters of choice, cut out cookie shapes
  8. Bake in a preheated 350 F oven for about 5-8 minutes. (5 minutes for a chewier cookie, up to 10 minutes for extra crunchy)

Notes

Make your own oat flour by simply blending rolled oats in a blender, food processor, or spice grinder until it is a flour consistency! Yes, it’s that easy!
